DESOTO, Texas – An off-duty Dallas police officer told dispatchers he accidentally shot his adult son after mistaking him for an intruder Saturday night in DeSoto, police say.

The incident happened in the 1400 block of Carriage Creek Drive in DeSoto at about 6 p.m. Saturday, according to authorities.

The man called police, identified himself as an off-duty officer and said he mistook his son for an intruder, DeSoto police said.

  • TWO CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS FOUND DEAD IN HOME

The officer’s son was bleeding from his forearm when first responders arrived and was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to life-threatening, reported NBCDFW.

Preliminary investigation reveals the unfortunate situation appears to be nothing more than a mistake. The off-duty officer believed there was an intruder in the rear of the home, by the garage area, which led to the shooting, police said.

DeSoto police public information officer Pete Schulte said it was a startling incident for the off-duty officer. Everyone was very happy the son’s injury was minimal when you consider what could have occurred. Nevertheless, once the investigation has concluded it will be reviewed by the DA’s office for a decision.
