The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office today released the name of the deputy involved in the shooting of a Round Mountain man who reportedly fired an arrow at an approaching patrol car.
Sgt. Jose Gonzalez, a 16-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office, shot Lee Roy Grecian, 52, who’d allegedly threatened deputies and fired the arrow at them, sheriff’s Sgt. John Hubbard said today in a press release.
Gonzalez is on paid administrative leave after the shooting, Hubbard said. He’s in the patrol division and had previously worked in the jail, administration and on the SWAT team for eight years.
The shooting happened as deputies were responding to a report of domestic violence at 9:48 p.m. on the 28000 block of Highway 299, about 25 miles east of Redding, said Lt. Jeff Wallace of the Redding Police Department.
When they arrived, Grecian confronted them from a second-floor balcony armed with a compound bow and arrows with broad-head hunting tips, Wallace said. Grecian made numerous threats to kill the officers and shot an arrow at them from a short distance away.
No deputies were injured, Wallace said.
Grecian shot an arrow at an approaching patrol vehicle, said Detective Sgt. John Hubbard of the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies tried to negotiate with Grecian, who refused to surrender and would not let them check on the alleged domestic violence victim inside the home, Wallace said.
Deputies said Grecian nocked a second arrow and tried to shoot at them a second time, Wallace said. Gonzalez then shot Grecian in the chest with a rifle. Grecian was arrested and sent by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where he was in critical condition, Wallace said.
A nursing supervisor at Mercy said today Grecian wasn't listed as a patient.
Grecian had injured a woman at the house, Wallace said.
Grecian faces possible charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and spousal abuse, Wallace said.
The Redding Police Department, rather than the sheriff's office, is investigating the shooting because it involved deputies.
