On Feb. 27, Spartanburg County (S.C.) Sheriff s Deputy Kevin Carper, 39, was shot and killed during a foot pursuit of a suspect who fled during a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot as soon as Carper attempted to stop him shortly after 2200 hrs. When Carper caught the suspect, a struggle ensued. The subject produced a .38-caliber handgun and shot Carper twice. Carper and a second deputy returned fire. Carper s vest stopped one of the suspect s rounds, but the second round entered one of the vest s armholes, causing a fatal wound to the chest. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.
