A Southern California sheriff’s deputy is out of surgery after being wounded in a shooting in the Mojave Desert city of Adelanto.
San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon says Deputy Robert Jahn is in critical but stable condition late Thursday morning.
The five-year veteran was hit by a round that went through his abdomen and struck several organs.
The sheriff says two deputies were conducting a traffic stop around 1 a.m. when they heard gunfire coming from an apartment building.
Deputies were approaching an apartment when the deputy was struck. The sheriff says other deputies got the wounded deputy out of the line of fire and he was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.
Witnesses said they heard as many as 20 shots fired.
McMahon says two men, both 26 and from Los Angeles, were taken into custody and will be booked into jail.
The reason for the gunfire remains under investigation.
