Retired K-9 Officer Bodie, the Sacramento Police Department canine shot and injured while saving his partner Officer Randy Van Dusen’s life in 2012, has died, according to a news report from the Sacramento Bee.
Officer Van Dusen and K-9 Bodie were attempting to arrest suspect Lucas Webb, after a vehicle pursuit and foot chase. Webb shot Bodie—and the bullet shattered the K-9’s jawbone, his two toes, and nearly severed his tongue, causing the canine to nearly bleed to death on May 18, 2012.

Suspect Webb was killed in the gunfight that followed. K-9 Bodie recovered from the incident after several surgeries, and sired five puppies during his retirement from the department.
Bodie was reunited with his only male puppy, Blitz, as the younger dog graduated K-9 training to become a member of the Ctirus Heights Police Department K-9 team, on August 17, 2016.
Bodie died after a sudden illness while suffering a bacterial infection on Novermber 8, 2016.
