Attorney general Jeff Sessions tied the recent increase in violent crime to a lack of respect for police officers.
“We’ve undermined the respect for the police and made their job more difficult,” noted Sessions in a Tuesday speech.
Suggesting that the increase in violent crime was linked to the changing perceptions of law enforcement after years of protests nationwide against how police officers use deadly force, Sessions vowed that the DOJ would be more supportive of local departments and “not diminish their effectiveness.”
“We’re not seeing the kind of effective community-based, street-based policing that we found to be so effective in reducing crime,” Sessions said during the speech.
