KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A gunman killed a police officer then fatally shot himself after running from officers who were investigating reports of gunfire in southwestern Michigan, authorities said Tuesday.
WDIV Video: Kalamazoo Officer Shot, Killed
An officer approached the 31-year-old man on the porch of a house in Kalamazoo at 11:18 p.m. Monday and asked if he had heard the shots, the Kalamazoo Public Safety Department said in a statement.
The man responded by brandishing a gun and exchanged fire with the officer before running between two houses, the department said.
Seconds later, other nearby officers said they heard more gunfire and found one of their colleagues had been shot to death. The gunman then turned the gun on himself.
Authorities did not immediately reveal the names of the officer and the suspect.
The department's Criminal Investigations Division and Office of Professional Standards were investigating the incident.
Chief Jeff Hadley told the Kalamazoo Gazette Tuesday that the mood at the department is "shock, stunned hurt."
"The officers are pretty emotional right now, as they should be. They've lost a friend and a colleague," he said.
Kalamazoo's public safety offices lowered flags to half-staff and officers wrapped a thin, black band across their badges.
"Kalamazoo Public Safety request prayers for the officer's family, loved ones and members of our department in the aftermath of this tragedy," the department's statement said.
Additional information was expected to be released Tuesday afternoon, police said. Kalamazoo is about 50 miles south of Grand Rapids and about 130 miles west of Detroit.
