EUGENE, Ore. — The fatal shooting of Eugene police officer Chris Kilcullen on Friday is part of an emerging national trend indicating that gun-related violence against police is on the rise.
As of Monday, gunfire had killed 32 law enforcement officers in the United States — compared with 17 nationwide last year through April 25, according to data compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
A total of 61 on-duty officers in the United States died after being shot in 2010, up from 49 in 2009.
