NEW YORK – Two off-duty city police officers were killed and four women were injured after the car they were riding in hit a guard rail in the Bronx.
The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. Sunday at East 233rd Street and the Bronx River Parkway.
Police say a car was going north on the parkway when it crashed into a guard rail.
Two off-duty New York City police officers riding in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the dead men as 32-year-old Kim Hoyoung and 25-year-old Edwin Paulino. They worked in the 32nd precinct in Harlem.
The other four occupants of the car were in serious but stable condition at Jacobi Hospital. Police didn't release any names, but said they were all women; two are 27 years old, one is 26 years old, and one is 20 years old.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Police would not comment on whether tests for drugs or alcohol were being conducted.
Police officers gathered in the parking lot in front of the emergency room entrance at Montifiore Medical Center's North Division, near to where the accident happened.
Just before 4 p.m., the bodies of the officers were put in an ambulance and driven away, escorted by police.
The families and friends of the officers left without talking to reporters.
The two deaths come the same day as another NYPD officer was gravely injured in Brooklyn after being accidentally hit by a motorcycle while he was chasing suspects in a car theft.
