Man With Hands Up Shot By Police

Man With Hands Up Shot By Police

An unarmed black man was shot by police while attempting to help a suicidal man with autism in North Miami, Florida, officials said.

Cellphone video from the scene showed 47-year-old Charles Kinsey, who is an employee of an assisted living facility, had laid on his back with his hands in the air while speaking with officers, who had drawn their guns.

“I’m like this right here, and when he shot me, it was so surprising,” Kinsey told WSVN-TV in Miami. “It was like a mosquito bite, and when it hit me, I’m like, ‘I still got my hands in the air, and I said, ‘No I just got shot! And I’m saying, ‘Sir, why did you shoot me?’ and his words to me, he said, ‘I don’t know.'”

So far, no video has surfaced of the actual shooting, but Kinsey said he still had his hands in the air when officers fired at him.

Police confirmed that one officer fired at Kinsey during the encounter, who was then transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers were initially called to the area after they received a call about an armed man threatening suicide. The officers “attempted to negotiate” with the man, according to police.

The officer who shot Kinsey was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

Officials said the investigation is underway and is being assisted by Miami-Dade State State Attorney’s office.

This is an unfortunate incident even the victim ask the cop why he shot and the cop could only respond with ” I don’t know”. Cops face death everyday not knowing if the next call will be their last. 8 cops lost their lives in an 11 day time span. Their senses are at an all time high and tho that doesn’t excuse this incident, It isn’t reason enough to strip them of their weapons and placing them in sure danger with no way to defend themselves. For this one video i can show you 10 or more videos where a cop during a routine traffic stop is shot in the face or worst. Gregory Geller & ahaz : Compliance is a guideline to go by to avert what happened in this video; only this time it failed unlike the other 99.9 times it worked. Cops are humans not super beings and infallible. Before you guys cry wolf I challenge both of you to do and face what a cop does everyday for just 1 week and i promise you will change your attitude. As i said in the beginning this is an unfortunate incident but not the fault of cops entirely. You share in the responsibility because its rhetoric like yours that have placed the targets on the backs of cops everywhere.

This incident precisely underscores my belief that the regular patrol officer needs to have deadly weapons removed. US police officers do not have the necessary training, display the necessary judgment and are given too much discretion to fire a weapon. I can practically guarantee that this incident would not have happened in any other westernized country. Is there something in the police playbook that prevents an officer from listening to someone. All they needed to do was listen and this whole incident could have been avoided. From the available video, any fool could see that this man was trying to diffuse a potentially deadly situation and protect the life of a mentally impaired man. What did the cops do? Hide behind their vehicles pointing their weapons and shouting. Is that the extent of your training? And to top it all off, shoot the man (black man) with his hands up laying on the ground. I guess “Hands up don’t shoot” isn’t a lie after all. There are far too many armed cops on the street endangering the citizens of this country.
