A suspect who fired at Lakewood Police was shot and killed by officers Tuesday night in the parking lot of a Motel 6.
Lakewood Police Det. Ty Countryman says the incident started when officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the Motel 6 near the intersection of Wadsworth Boulevard and West Fifth Avenue.
Initially, there was no one in the stolen car. The officers surveyed the car while they tried to determine which room the person associated with it was staying in. Countryman says a man approached the vehicle around 9:20 p.m.
When officers tried to contact that man, he took off running and produced a weapon, according to Countryman.
Both the suspect and police fired gunshots. Countryman says three officers were involved, and none of them were injured.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are trying to determine why he ran away from police in the first place, and how he was associated with the vehicle.
