On Saturday evening, four Cook County (IL) correctional officers were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries sustained in connection with an incident in Division 9, Cook County Jail’s super maximum security division.
The incident occurred in a tier designated for problematic detainees who engage in sexual misconduct. These detainees are issued specially designed jumpsuits which they sought to destroy by using the microwave to ignite a wick in attempt to light the uniforms on fire.
This resulted in a small fire and smoke in the living unit. Two officers were transported to an area hospital for evaluation related to smoke exposure, and two officers were transported to an area hospital for injuries related to securing the tier.
As of Sunday morning, all the officers had been released from the hospital and were recovering well.
