A Springfield Police K-9 officer later spotted a vehicle with a Rhode Island license plate matching the number given by Enfield Police. Springfield Police officers then initiated a traffic stop.
While investigating, the driver tried to flee with the vehicle and sped off—striking two officers.
Sgt. Delaney spoke to 22News stating that the officers were “fearing for their safety” and fired shots at the vehicle as it drove off.
The ensuing pursuit criss-crossed West Springfield and Springfield, where the vehicle crashed at Central and Maple Street.
The driver had suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he was later released from hospital care.
Two other suspects were arrested, but a third ran from the scene of the crash and has not been arrested. All three suspects were also allegedly involved in an armed robbery of a 7-Eleven in Springfield that occurred shortly before the traffic stop.
