A Maryland man grabbed an officer’s gun while cuffed in Hillside’s police headquarters Friday and fatally shot himself, authorities say.
Jermaine Covington, 41, of Baltimore, Maryland, had fled the scene of a car crash in Union Township at around 1 p.m. that day, but police called off the chase due to safety concerns, acting Union County Prosecutor Michael Monahan said in a release Saturday.
Later that afternoon, Union Township police again spotted Covington’s car, according to the release. Covington then attempted to run from his car and steal another vehicle but was arrested by Hillside police, Monahan said.
While Covington was cuffed to a bar in the police processing area at about 4:45 p.m., the man grabbed the gun from a passing officer’s holster and fatally shot himself, Monahan said.
Covington was pronounced dead at the scene.
