2 Florida Police Officers Shot and Killed
A suspect has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death on Friday of two Kissimmee Police officers.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, police arrested 45-year-old Everett Glenn Miller Saturday morning in the shooting. O’Dell said the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office recently took Miller into custody under Florida’s Baker Act, which allows involuntary commitment of people in mental health crises.
Officer Matthew Baxter and Sgt. Sam Howard were both shot and killed. The uniformed officers were investigating three suspicious people in the area of Palmway and Cypress streets about 9:30 p.m. Five minutes later, dispatchers received the first call reporting the officers had been shot.
The officers did not return fire. O’Dell said “it looked like they were surprised” by the gunfire.
Baxter, 27, and Howard, 36, were wearing body armor underneath their uniforms when they were shot, O’Dell said.
Deputies arrested Miller after viewing surveillance video of the incident. They located him at Roscoe’s Bar where Miller reached toward his waistband. Deputies tackled him to the ground and secured him while other people were inside the bar. Police said Miller was found with two firearms on him when he was taken into custody.
