Representative Steve Scalise (LA) and two Capitol police officers were shot Wednesday at a baseball practice for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia.
A congressional aide said Scalise was in stable condition at George Washington University Hospital. Chief Michael Brown said five people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The conditions of the police officers have not been released. Senator Rand Paul said that if the police officers were not present it would have been a “massacre”.
There are reports of between 50-100 shots being fired from a rifle towards members from Congress.
The shooter reportedly asked whether the congressional officials were “democrat or republican” prior to opening fire. All of the present members were republican.
Police from surrounding areas “arrived within three minutes” and the suspect was shot and has been taken into custody.
