A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was killed Friday after being struck by a driver while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Fairfield.
The officer was identified as Kirk Griess out of the Solano CHP office.
Griess was on the shoulder of westbound lanes of the interstate around 9 a.m. conducting a traffic stop on a Saturn SUV near Manuel Campos Parkway, officials said. For an unknown reason, a white Chevy pickup truck veered to the right and hit him and the Saturn, the CHP said.
The truck, the Saturn and Griess’s motorcycle came to a rest in a debris field of twisted metal that was scattered around the highway.
Everyone involved in the crash was taken to local hospitals. Griess was later pronounced dead, authorities said. The conditions of the other drivers were not immediately released.
