The Dedham Police Department (MA) announced the sudden death of Officer Robert Chermesino on their Facebook page.
The Dedham Police Department regrets to inform you of the sudden passing of Officer Robert Chermesino. Officer Chermesino passed away on February 18, 2017. Officer Chermesino served the Dedham Police Department for over 6 years. No further information will be available at this time. We ask that all respect the privacy of the Chermesino family at this very difficult time.
Chermesino was awarded a commendation from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Transit Police in 2013 for his work responding to the Boston Marathon bombings.
He delivered blood supplies to Mount Auburn Hospital, which were critical to the survival of Transit Police Officer Richard Donohue.
Donohue was wounded in Watertown during a police confrontation with bombing suspects.
The incident is believed to be non-criminal in nature, although it remains under an active investigation.
