The Bloomington-Normal chapter of Black Lives Matter is asking the Bloomington (IL) police chief to denounce and not attend a Blue Lives Matter rally Monday evening.
In a letter to Bloomington Police Chief Brendan Heffner, the group asks Heffner to not attend the rally outside City Hall, citing the recent deadly protests in Charlottesville.
That Blue Lives Matter Facebook page said the rally is to express support for law enforcement with no ill will toward any group.
“As in the past, the Bloomington Police Department respects the First Amendment rights for all groups to assemble in a respectful and peaceful manner.,” said an e-mailed statement from a Bloomington police public information officer. “BPD is aware of the event, and will respond appropriately if needed.”
