The fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl that stirred public outcry in Camden (NJ) and led to a month-long manhunt for the killer resulted in an arrest Friday, when the suspect was found nearly 860 miles away — in Tennessee.
U.S. Marshals arrested Tyhan Brown, 18, at an uncle’s home there in the town of Clarksville, where they say he had been staying for nearly a month. Brown is awaiting extradition back to Camden, where he is from, authorities said.
Authorities say Brown, who has been charged with murder, shot Gabrielle “Gabby” Hill Carter, who was riding a bicycle on a sidewalk across the street from her home the evening of Aug. 24 when a bullet struck her in the head.
More arrests are expected and the shooting was the result of inner-gang violence.
Brown’s mother, Shakia Land, has been charged with hindering the investigation by providing a false alibi for her son. Another woman, Natasha Gerald, faced similar charges this week. Both are from Camden.
Police said the bullet that stuck Gabby Carter was intended for someone else.
Gabby was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where she died two days later.
