He is listed in critical condition following surgery.
The incident occurred when the officer responded to a disturbance at a business. As he approached the suspect, he would not cooperate and fled on a skateboard.
The officer chased him and at one point the suspect turned around and hit the officer in the head with the skateboard.
The suspect was captured by responding officers.
South San Francisco Mayor Mark Addiego was told of the incident and issued a statement.
“This is so disheartening to hear of this incident, in a City such as South San Francisco. We are a tight-knit community, with a police force that is our family,” Addiego said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with this officer and his family.”
The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas of South San Francisco.
The name of the police officer injured is not being released at this time.
