Authorities fatally shot a man outside a D.C. Metro station Monday after officers encountered him pointing a gun at someone on the street.
A Metro Transit Police officer fired on the unidentified man just a block away from the Deanwood Metro station at the corner of 49th and Quarles Street in northwest D.C.. Metro police responded to a report of suspicious activity and found the man shooting his weapon. Police confronted the man, at which point the man began shooting at officers.
The unidentified shooter fired multiple rounds at the officer before he fired back. The officer struck the shooter in the upper torso. Authorities took the shooter to a local hospital where he died from the wound. No officers were injured in the course of the shootout.
D.C. Metro officials are responding to a troubling double-digit spike in the crime rate this year on Metro trains and around stations, increasing patrols and security.
