Over the past 22 years in law enforcement, it’s been my observation that most cops don’t like cleaning guns, even the ones who really like shooting. Given this, I’m always looking for new products that make gun cleaning less time consuming and messy. After all, less time cleaning guns translates into more time shooting them! With that in mind, I’m also leery of any “wonder product” that claims to do all the work without any effort on the part of the user.
After seeing a product demonstration and using the product myself, I became excited at the prospect of finding the proverbial “magic bullet” (pun intended) of gun cleaning. However, the most cynical group of people I know of—fellow cops—tend to be the best judges of equipment.
I invited the sales rep and manufacturer/inventor of FrogLube to a recent SWAT weapons training day so that my team members could decide for themselves if this product was really what it claimed to be. The answer was a resounding “Yes.” In fact, every one of our SWAT team members ended up ordering their own supply.
So, what’s this product and how does it work? The product is called FrogLube. The name is derived from its inventor (Retired U.S. Navy Captain Larry Lasky, a 32-year member of the elite Navy SEAL Teams). In fact, the SEALS were among the first to test and evaluate this cutting-edge weapon cleaning product. SEALS and other military units are currently using
FrogLube all over the world, a testament to how well it works in environments as diverse as deserts, mountains and salt-water environments.
The answer to how it works can be summed up in two words: incredibly well. Almost unbelievably, all the user has to do is apply the paste or liquid (it comes in both mediums) to the weapon and it dissolves the gunk. All parts of any weapon system can be cleaned with this product. While Lasky’s personal method involves merely applying the product and then casing or holstering it, I prefer cleaning it thoroughly, wiping it off and then reapplying a small amount as a lubricant and protectant.
Among its many unique characteristics, FrogLube is made entirely from food-grade ingredients. In fact, the demonstration team (Lasky and John “Sonny” Latham, also a former Navy SEAL and FrogLube distributor) actually ate some of their product to demonstrate its safety. What’s so amazing is the non-toxic, biodegradable substance easily dissolves carbon, grease and sludge on contact. FrogLube is such an environmentally safe and “green” product it was given the USDA’s designation “bio-preferred.” I’m no tree-hugger, but I can tell you my wife appreciates the cleanliness and non-odor of FrogLube so much, she actually allows me to clean guns at the kitchen table or in front of the living room television, as long as I use FrogLube. I’m also allowed to comingle gun cleaning rags with other laundry—something unheard of with other major products.
