KNOXVILLE, Tenn — A Knoxville man accused of killing a former police officer has been indicted this week on charges that include murder.
A Knox County jury Tuesday indicted Douglas England of Brookside Avenue on charges of first-degree murder, felony murder, especially aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal shooting of former Knoxville Police Department Detective Mike "Boot" Parker, 63.
Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies found Parker shot in the head March 1 at his 3021 Rifle Range Road home in North Knox County. He died three days later.
Authorities said England, 41, shot Parker during a robbery.
As of Wednesday evening, England remained behind bars in the Knox County Jail in lieu of $2 million bond.
Parker, a former KPD investigator and competitive bodybuilder, left the department in 1989 after obtaining a law license.
He was later convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for helping to rob a pizza parlor.
He left prison on parole in 1996.
