To enhance the survival usefulness of your range training at no additional cost and time, try this: Attach (staple or slide on) a t-shirt to the target. Shooting at the t-shirt does a number of things for you:
1. You get used to shooting at something that looks like what you may be shooting at if you have to shoot someone;
2. You get used to shooting at an un-scored target with no scoring rings or areas to aim at;
3. Your shot placement on the t-shirt will give you a better idea of the effectiveness of the rounds than the scoring rings on a traditional target will. (I say rounds plural because you should shoot multiple rounds); and
4. You can easily mix up t-shirt colors to see how they affect your ability to see the sights against them.
If you re a trainer, don t discount the value of #1 above. There are some people in our recruit ranks who just cannot bring themselves to shoot another person no matter what. We want to discover who these people are because they need to be counseled into another profession.
