COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Prince George's County Police Chief Roberto Hylton is suspending one officer and is investigating others who took part in the beating of a college student during a post-basketball game demonstration here last month.
Police originally arrested the student, Jack McKenna of Kensington, and charged him with assaulting a police officer, but prosecutors dismissed the charge after a videotape showed it was McKenna who was attacked by police.
"I am outraged. I'm outraged," said Hylton in an interview with reporters Monday evening.
"We have actually identified one of the officers involved who played a role in this incident and he's going to be immediately suspended. We're in the process of identifying these other officers, and we will conduct an internal investigation. There's going to be some accountability for these actions," Chief Hylton said.
That could mean criminal charges against the officers, those who struck the student and those who may have falsified court documents in charging him.
"When they're done with that initial investigation we'll take it to the grand jury stage and we'll see where it goes from there," said States Attorney Glenn Ivey.
Another jury will get a crack at the case, as well. McKenna is planning to sue the department for damages.
