The crash occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Windrim Avenue as the officers in an unmarked car were driving across Broad Street, in the Logan section of the city.
The westbound police vehicle was struck in the side and then hit a utility pole.
Police said the undercover officers were on their way back to the 39th District from Northwest Detectives but did not further elaborate on what led up to the collision.
All three of the injured officers were transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Police originally said one officer was in serious condition and one was in stable but later said they expected those two to be treated and released.
Police clarified overnight that the third officer's condition remains critical. That officer was said to have a broken leg and a head contusion.
Police weren't immediately saying where the driver of the Pontiac, which wound up hitting a tree, was taken. We do believe he is with police, possibly at a hospital and being questioned. They're not saying that the driver is under arrest or in custody.
