WAUKEE, Iowa — Authorities say police officers rescued a woman before her suburban Des Moines home was filled with flames.
Police and firefighters were alerted by calls from neighbors who said they'd heard an explosion at the home in Waukee about 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Police officers were first on the scene and were told that a woman was inside the home. The officers went in and carried out a woman who has physical disabilities. Flames soon erupted from the smoke-filled house.
Waukee Fire Chief Clint Robinson says the officers "unquestionably saved the lady's life." She refused medical treatment.
Firefighters later found the woman's dog inside the home and rescued it.
The fire cause is being investigated. The house is considered a total loss.
