BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut have identified a man shot death in an early morning hail of gunfire that also left eight other people wounded.
Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett says 37-year-old Savonnie (sah-VAHN'-ee) McNeil, of Shelton, died when at least two men in hooded sweatshirts opened fire at about 1 a.m. Thursday on a group that had gathered in the parking lot of the Trumbull Gardens housing complex.
Gaudett says the victims were between 27 and 59 years old. He says one woman was hit in the back by a stray bullet while taking a shower inside her apartment.
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch asked parents to tell their teenage sons to put away their guns and forget about any retribution for the shootings. He also says the city plans to install surveillance cameras in the neighborhood.

This story has been corrected, based on updated information from police, to show that the slain man is 37, not in his 40s and that the oldest victim is 59, not elderly.
