NEW YORK – New York City police say a Nicaraguan diplomatic official was found dead in an apartment with his throat slit.
Police say the 34-year-old man was found by his driver at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday.
The official's name has not been released. He was believed to be headed to the United Nations for the opening of the General Assembly's annual meeting.
Police did not release the man's name, but said they believed him to be a consular official.
Authorities say the body was discovered just inside the door of the man's sixth-floor apartment. The door was ajar. A knife was recovered at the scene.
An assistant to Nicaragua's ambassador to the United Nations, Maria Rubiales de Chamorro, said the mission couldn't immediately release any information.
