ASHLAND, N.Y. — Authorities say an on-duty sheriff's deputy and a 77-year-old man have been killed in a collision on an upstate New York road near the Pennsylvania border.
The Chemung County Sheriff's Office says 26-year-old Jeffrey Alexander was traveling on Route 427 in the town of Ashland when he collided head-on with another vehicle around 11 a.m. Sunday.
The other driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Alexander died a short time later at a local hospital.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by state police.
Alexander joined the sheriff's office in December 2006. He's survived by his parents and fiancee.
Alexander was the second upstate sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty within a week. Kurt Wyman died last Tuesday after being shot during a standoff in Oneida County.
