JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Jackson police officer has been struck and killed while removing debris from Interstate 55 in the city.
Police Chief Lindsey Horton says the officer received a call about 1:30 p.m. Saturday about debris on I-55 south. Horton says the officer found a barbeque grill had fallen onto the roadway.
Horton says the officer was moving the grill off the highway when he was hit by a motorist.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.
Horton says the motorist was injured and was taken to UMMC.
Horton says an investigation is continuing.
