EL PASO, Texas — A 31-year-old man who slashed a police sergeant on the face with a knife was shot by another police officer Thursday, police said.
Just before 5 p.m., an officer and a sergeant responded to a call about a man with a knife in the 5200 block of Beautonne Avenue in the Northeast, police said.
While police were talking to the resident who had called police, the man charged out of a home and attacked the sergeant. A second officer shot the man, said police spokesman Officer Chris Mears.
Brianna Harris, who lives across the street from the shooting scene, said a man with a knife had been arguing with another resident.
"I came outside of my house and he was walking with a knife," said Harris, 15. "I just saw them arguing. … I just went back inside, and they just called the cops."
Mears said that after police arrived, the man "exited the residence and attacked" the sergeant, cutting him on the face. Mears would not disclose how many shots were fired and knew little about the man who was shot.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to Beaumont Army Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition. The sergeant was taken to an undisclosed hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mears said.
El Paso police have been involved in two fatal shootings this year.
On March 29, John "Scrappy" Dalton Martinez was fatally shot by two officers after he allegedly shot and wounded another man in the Lucky Star Food Market in Central El Paso.
On June 13, an officer fatally shot Gregory Smith, who appeared to brandish a handgun, which was later found to be a toy gun, outside the Coronado Motel on the West Side.
An investigation into the latest shooting continues.
