Lighthouse Point, FL November 21, 2012 – NDI Recognition Systems customer Lighthouse Point Police Department used their automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras to identify the owner of a getaway car used in a bank robbery in Pompano Beach, FL, on November 9. Information about the vehicle was shared with federal agents and the suspect was taken into custody within hours of the crime.
Police Chief Ross Licata said the license plate recognition system, from NDI Recognition Systems, was the key to making a fast arrest in the case. “Our LPR system continues to provide great investigative benefits to our officers in identifying and solving crimes in Lighthouse Point,” Chief Licata stated. “In this case, the LPR system was instrumental in developing a suspect and ultimately making an arrest for this crime.”
Following a robbery at the TD Bank branch in Pompano Beach, witnesses were able to give officers detailed descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle he used. The Lighthouse Point Police Department searched their ALPR tag database for cars that matched the description, and were able to identify a suspect vehicle entering the City of Lighthouse Point fifteen minutes before the robbery. The registered owner of the vehicle matched the physical description of the witnesses at the scene.
The suspect was located in the City of Pompano Beach approximately two hours after the robbery. Following a joint criminal investigation between the Lighthouse Point Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the suspect was arrested and will be arraigned later this month on bank robbery charges. To date, the system has helped investigators recover about $500,000 in property and dozens of stolen cars, Licata said..
