NEW YORK (AP) — Defense lawyers say an off-duty New York City police officer accused of raping a teacher walking to work didn't mean to harm anyone.
Prosecutors said Wednesday that Michael Pena had been indicted, but the charges weren't immediately disclosed. He is being held on $1 million bond.
Authorities say a drunken Pena approached the woman Friday and asked for directions to a subway stop. They say he showed her a gun, took her to an Upper Manhattan apartment building's backyard and raped her. A resident called 911. Pena was arrested in the backyard.
Pena's lawyers on Wednesday declined to detail his version of the events, but they say he "had no intent to hurt anybody."
He has been suspended from the police force without pay.
