WASHINGTON (WTTG) – The Charlie Sheen D.C. Police escort controversy has now led to the reassignment of two Metropolitan Police Department officers.
As the result of an internal investigation that is not yet completed, a police captain and lieutenant have been reassigned from the department's special operations division to a school security detail in the department's Third District.
Sheen brought his wacky one-man show to Constitution Hall in April – the same day he was in divorce court for a child custody hearing in Los Angeles. As a result, Sheen was running late. When his flight from Los Angeles landed at Dulles International Airport, a D.C. Police escort was there waiting for him.
On the ride into the District, Sheen posted a picture on his Twitter account bragging that he and his police escort were speeding at about 80 mph with lights blaring and sirens screaming to get him to the show. They did not arrive on time, but an hour late.
When word got out about the courtesy afforded to Sheen, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced there would be an investigation, saying police escorts are sometimes granted to celebrities if higher ups approve, the cost is reimbursed and only when public safety is an issue.
She said that officers are never supposed to leave the city without the other jurisdiction's assistance.
We are told airport police were not notified or asked for help in the Sheen matter, a case still under review by the department.
A D.C. Police union official is criticizing the department's decision to reassign the two officers, calling Chief Lanier's handling of the incident "inconsistent."
