ROMNEY, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a sheriff's deputy and passing motorists saved a baby from a burning car after a crash that killed two people on a central Indiana highway.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department says the deputy was responding to reported car swerving in and out of traffic recklessly on U.S. 231 when the car crossed the center line and hit another car nearly head-on Monday.
The car that caused the crash caught fire. WLFI-TV reports Deputy Randy Martin broke through its rear window, pulled out the unharmed 7-month-old baby and handed the child to another motorist.
The Journal & Courier reports police didn't immediately identify the driver, who died at the scene near the community of Romney.
The other driver, 28-year-old Jennifer York of Lafayette, died at an Indianapolis hospital.
