EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a man who refused to pay a bus fare then stole an East St. Louis police car and raced away, eventually killing a newlywed woman in a car the police cruiser hit.
Police say 41-year-old Maxsimillion Quarles-Gaston of Belleville died at the scene of the wreck Wednesday.
Authorities are pursuing charges against the suspect they say was traveling at more than 100 mph when he plowed into the back of Quarles-Gaston's car and another vehicle.
East St. Louis Assistant Police Chief R.O. Ike says the trouble began after officers were called to escort a man off a commuter bus because he refused to pay the fare.
Ike says an officer was trying to get the man off the bus when the man hopped into the officer's car.
