DETROIT – The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department is taking action against the sheriff’s deputy who allegedly was caught sleeping on the job while guarding a prisoner.
Video: Sheriff's Office Investigates Sleeping Deputy
A photo of the allegedly sleeping deputy was mailed to Local 4 by someone who claimed to work at Detroit Receiving Hospital.
The tipster said the deputy was asleep while guarding a prisoner who was also a patient at the hospital.
The tipster said he or she was a concerned hospital employee who feared the inmate would be able to get the sleeping deputy’s gun.
Local 4 contacted the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office told Local 4 that they’re aware of the situation and released this statement, in part:
“Because it is a matter under internal investigation and we do not know the factual events surrounding the alleged behavior, we are unable to name the employee at this time. At the onset of the investigation, the employee in question was reassigned until the matter is fully investigated and resolved. Sheriff Napoleon takes a tough stance on professional responsibility and integrity and will continue to make public safety a priority."
The tipster said they sent the picture because the deputy had fallen asleep on more than one occasion.
Detroit Receiving Hospital told Local 4 that they’re investigating if the picture was taken in the hospital.
