A Fort Bend County sheriff's deputy who was critically injured during a traffic wreck while on a emergency call late last month died this morning at the hospital.
Deputy John Norsworthy died about 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Hermann Hospital, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
Initial reports indicate another motorist failed to yield right-of-way Dec. 27 to Norsworthy's patrol car, which was traveling north down FM 762 with its lights flashing and siren blaring. Norsworthy swerved to avoid a collision, lost control of his squad car and plowed into a ditch, hit a tree and flipped, authorities said.
Norsworthy, who was wearing his seat belt, was trapped underneath his smashed cruiser for an hour. He had to be cut out of the vehicle after inflated airbags were used to upright it. He was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
According to police reports, Norsworthy had been summoned to back up another officer conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle with suspected stolen parts.
