Elizabethtown Borough's 2011 Officer of the Year helps train and guide new officers, but he isn't new to the department's highest honor.
Borough council members and town officials on Thursday recognized Shane Deardorff and continued an annual tradition started in 2002.
Deardorff is the first officer to win the award twice, having also received the title in 2006.
"It brings great pride to me as chief and to the department as a whole when someone of the quality of Officer Deardorff receives this award," borough police Chief Jack Mentzer said.
Deardorff joined the department in 1998 as a part-time officer and become full time the following year. He won numerous awards and commendations during his career in Elizabethtown.
Mentzer cited Deardorff's work in the field training program, which helps newly hired officers over the course of their first several months on the force.
Deardorff thanked his fellow officers, including several who attended the meeting.
"Police work is teamwork," he said.
