FLA. — Hundreds of motorcyclists and motorists Saturday morning embarked on a weeklong Florida road trip in memory of slain Broward Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Reyka, whose killing remains unsolved.
Reyka was gunned down outside a Pompano Beach Walgreens the morning of Aug. 10, 2007, while checking on a suspicious car in the parking lot.
The road trip kicked off in Pembroke Park, outside the Circle K store that was the site of a deputy killing on Nov. 13, 1990 – that of Deputy Patrick Behan. That case, too, remains unsolved.
The riders plan to travel Interstate 95 to north Florida, cut west into the Panhandle and then dip south along the Gulf Coast before returning to Broward.
Along the way, they plan to pay tribute to other law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and attempt to set a record for blood donations collected during a single event.
Anyone wishing to track the riders can find their schedule at sgtchrisreyka.com, a memorial Web site created by Deputy Brian Donnelly, who was the first to reach Reyka after he was shot.
Reyka, 51, of Wellington, left a wife and four children. Broward Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $267,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Call 954-493-TIPS.
