WAUKESHA, Wis. — A woman was being held Tuesday in the Waukesha County Jail on $250,000 bail after she was charged with ramming two squad cars and hitting a truck in what authorities say is her second drunken-driving offense.
Misty D. Overton, 18, of Waukesha is accused of fleeing a police officer who was attempting to stop her for driving without headlights on at 8:50 p.m. Monday as she left Discount Liquor in downtown Waukesha, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Waukesha County Circuit Court.
The episode, which came less than a month after Overton was convicted for the first time of drunken driving, ended only after an officer using a baton smashed a window of Overton's car and pulled her out, the complaint says.
Overton sped up as an officer followed her through downtown Waukesha and along Moreland Blvd., and speeds reached 60 mph in the pursuit, the complaint says.
As they crossed the Fox River, Overton traveled onto the concrete median to pass a truck, striking the truck on the driver's side, the complaint says. The officer called for backup. She continued along Moreland Blvd., pulling into the parking lot of Moreland Medical Center, 1111 Delafield St., the complaint says.
Officers blocked all exits at the medical building, and one officer entered the parking area. The officer found Overton, heard her rev the engine of her purple Pontiac Sunfire and saw her speed up to 80 mph and drive into his squad car, according to the complaint. Her vehicle bounced off the squad car, she revved it again and drove into a second squad car, the complaint says. Officers were inside both squad cars.
The first officer whose vehicle was struck ran to Overton's car, broke a window and pulled her out of the vehicle. She was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the complaint says.
One officer suffered a leg injury in the crash.
A preliminary breath test showed the woman's blood-alcohol level was 0.26. The state considers 0.08 evidence of intoxication.
Overton is charged with two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, one count of second-degree reckless endangerment and one count of fleeing, all felonies. She is also charged with three misdemeanors: second-offense drunken driving, operating after revocation and hit-and-run. If convicted of all offenses, the maximum penalty would be 45 years in prison and nearly $90,000 in fines.
Overton was convicted of first-offense drunken driving Aug. 21, according to the complaint.
She is scheduled to be back in court Sept. 25.
