ALHAMBRA, Calif. — Investigators say the Alhambra police officers involved in a collision that left one dead and one hospitalized early Sunday had the lights of their patrol cars on.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating. Spokesman Luis Mendoza told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune Monday they were still trying to determine how fast the cars were going as they responded to a robbery, if they were using sirens and if the officers' seatbelts were fastened.
Photos showed air bags deployed in 26-year-old Officer Ryan Stringer's car but 27-year-old Officer Juan Carlos Mejia was ejected from his car.
Stringer was killed. Mejia is in stable condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral says Stringer died of head trauma.
Mendoza says it was a high-speed T-bone collision.
