ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The police chief of Alaska's largest city has been reprimanded after a collision blamed by a police report on the chief's inattention.
Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew says he was clearing an alert message or messages from the screen of his iPhone before he rear-ended another vehicle at an intersection. Mew has not been charged or ticketed in the incident, which was investigated by police.
A police spokesman describes the Sept. 20 crash as a "bumper cruncher."
The Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/qx9Qp1 ) says no injuries were reported at the time of the collision, but the driver of the other vehicle, Christopher Mathis of Anchorage, later went to the hospital complaining of neck and back pain.
Mew says he was issued a verbal reprimand by the city manager following the collision.
