COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJLA) — Three people were shot and two were killed — all of them students — early Tuesday morning in an apparent murder-suicide near the University of Maryland campus in College Park.
It happened inside a home in the 8700 block of 36th Avenue just before 1 a.m, authorities say. Prince George's County Police officials say that one of the men who lived inside the home started several small fires in the basement and back yard, forcing all of the occupants outside.
Once outside the house, the man opened fire, shooting both of his roommates several times, officials say, before going back inside and taking his own life. One of the roommates died from his injuries at the hospital, while the other is expected to survive.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. The Diamondback reports that school officials are still working to notify the victim's families.
A campus alert was issued shortly after the incident, police say, but officials do not have a lookout for any other potential suspects.
"The University of Maryland community awoke this morning to heartbreak," University of Maryland President Wallace Loh said in a statement. "We are all shocked and saddened."
